Fashion is my passion, but it comes with a hefty price.  Not only is it an expensive hobby, the recent emphasis on fast fashion and how harmful it is for the environment is something that we need to be conscious of.  As young adults trying to get by in high school, college, or fresh out of school it is important to understand the importance of budgeting money.  There are obvious expenses such as rent, tuition, groceries, gas, etc.  But many find it hard to find the funds for these things and still have some left over for any fun things, like clothing.  Because clothing and shopping are necessities but also something that people genuinely enjoy it can be hard to want to pass up that sale at Urban Outfitters or buy those cute jeans at Lucky. The trick here is making use of what you have.  You don’t need to go shopping every month for the newest outfit.  It isn’t good for your bank account, or the environment.  Simple ways of changing up a plain outfit can make a huge difference.  Something that I try to do to challenge myself is creating fun unique outfits out of the very basics.  Things that you could buy from Walmart but accessorizing in a way that makes it totally chic! Everyone probably has black pants and a plain white top.  It is what you do with it that can make you feel better about saving some money.  If you do want to buy something it can be a small accessory such as a hairband or pair of socks.  It doesn’t have to be a $300 dollar shopping trip. Everyone can enjoy the process because it is what you make of the same outfit that makes you stand out.  Say you have a favorite jacket and necklace. Boom, a completely different look than the bland black and white ensemble.  Maybe you don’t have financial struggles and thing well if I can spend the money why don’t I? Here’s the thing, the fashion industry is a huge concern when it comes to the environment.  In an article published by Business Insider in October by Morgan Mcfall- Johnson stated that the fashion industry is accountable for 10% of the world’s carbon emission.  It uses up a large supply of the world’s water sources and causes pollution. While, fast fashion may be appealing due to the prices there is still upwards of 85% of textiles being thrown out each year.  I know that because I am so interested and invested in the fashion industry, I want to make sure that I know the facts and consequences of it.  While being aware of these issues can bring awareness and change that will inevitably improve the industry and the lives affected by it.  Honestly, wear whatever makes you happy and you feel comfortable in. Just think about how you can reuse reduce and recycle those pieces to help yourself, and our environment.
